Technical Writers simplify
and magnify information which can be used as an intermediate or a
final component of the information centric-technology driven
environment. Technical writers work with words and technical
writing tools while drawing expertise from the domain they are
working in. Their craft involves breaking down jargon and complex
technological pieces of information into a simple set of
instructions and explanations that are accessible to users - both
within and outside the organizational structures, thus bridging the
gap between technological information and its users.
A Technical Writer will usually find him/herself producing
technical documents either for technology intermediaries like
software writers and testers, engineering and implementation teams
or users of products - both consumer and industrial. Documents
produced by technical writers for these categories fall under
technical documentation.
Technical documentation for consumer products includes user manuals, instruction guides, maintenance manuals - documents that usually accompany consumer technology products like mobile phones, music systems and TVs.
Documentation for industrial products requires the Technical Writer to write documents refining and describing information for the intermediate users. These include machinery usage guides, process documentation, software development life cycle documents, policy manuals, product formulations and industry/organization standardization manuals. The sectors where this kind of documentation may be required are diverse and range from software, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, telecom, nanotechnology, heavy engineering and automotives.
During the course of their careers Technical Writers work on a variety of projects for a diverse set of clients and produce documents that include:
User Manuals, Installation Guides, Maintenance Manuals, Troubleshooting Guides, Online Help, Instruction Booklets, Quick Reference Guides, Reports, Policy Manuals, Process Documentation, White Papers, Background Papers, Project Proposals, Case Studies, Brochures, Web Content, Power Point Presentations, Organizational Procedures and Feasibility Reports.
